Cups with values
Before working beginning this assignment, students created a value scale, beginning with zero value to a very dark value.
Students positioned the cups and drew a contour drawing (an outline of the cups). With the lights off, students observed the values on the cups. We aimed for the cups to be at least 4 inches in height and using at least 4 values.

Art Supplies
This is a separate list from Draper's school list.
These supplies will stay in the art room and separated from other art classes.
If you need assistance with any of the supplies please send me an email, and I will see what I can do.
If you are able to donate any supplies to students, that would be appreciated! Please send me an email.

This will be used as the student's portfolio. Students will place graded artwork in their portfolio. Students are welcome to take this home during the school year but please return to the art room. At the end of the year, students will review the work done during the school year.

Pointillism Seahorses
Working on Pointillism is code for, you better be patient, and patient my artist were.
We began our project by watching a video on YouTube about Seahorses
Next we discussed French Chemist Michel Chevreul, focusing on his study of color interaction leading to his discovery of Simultaneous Contrast. When placed side by side, these colors can appear altered especially at a distance. Complementary colors are intensified when next to each other or when overlapped.

I showed students work from Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. Seurat was inspired by Chevreul's findings and began to apply these findings in his art work thus creating Divisionism, later coined Pointillism by critics.
Students first practiced on a couple of worksheets using Crayola markers.
After practicing on the worksheets, students drew their design in pencil then outlined their seahorses and its habitat in marker.
Students used primary, secondary, and intermediate colors dots to create a variety of values.
In the background, students created a pattern using complementary colors. During the process, the artists stood back to watch the dots disappear. I admire their patience during the process!

6th graders debut with a drawing of the American Flag. Before beginning the lesson, students completed a value scale in pencil.

Minimalist Sculpture
Our lesson on Minimalist Sculpture led me to a lesson I found online...
Art Teacher Blog- The Adventures of a Melbourne Art Teacher
Students were shown sculpture from artist, Tony Smith. Their design was to incorporate the appearance of a circle, square and triangle and to add a shape in their shape.
I enjoyed (maybe my students didn't :) ) watching them problem solve. I showed students visuals of an example I had last year that is shown at the bottom.

Paper Mache time! finding the balance between not enough paper mache glue and too much :).
Note: I use paper mache powder. All you have to do is add water and wait 5 minutes. I tried old fashion recipe but our humidity gave us mold even when I added more salt. The smell was horrendous :p
